Everybody Wants To Summarize Your Meetings
Were you not paying attention in that meeting? Were you running late and need to get caught up with a transcription of what’s happened so far? Do you need Zoom to compose a chat for you because you have nothing to say? Do you actually hate meetings and just surf the web and hope you don’t get caught? Don’t worry, everyone now has an AI tool for you. There are a ton of independent tools as well.
Slack can do it | Zoom can do it | Google can do it
Long Read of the Week: Maggie Appleton
I’ve spent the entire summer trying to get a better understanding of how Large language Models really work so I can bring this information to my students. If you’re still curious and think this might be relevant, you should read Squish Meets Structure: Designing with Large Language Models by Maggie Appleton. I’ve been a big fan of her writing for the last year and the is the best article I’ve read all summer.
Time: The 100 Most influential People in AI
Are you still using this newsletter to look like the smartest person at your work? Are you looking for new names to drop? AI Video Tool Roundup
I’ve also spent the entire summer trying to get a better understanding of which tools are being used for what I’ll loosely call “AI Generated Video”. If you’re curios about the current sate of the art and have 4 minutes. You should really watch this video.
UPDATE: That video is so “three weeks ago”. Both RunwayML and Pika have new features as of today: Read more
RunwayML’s Gen-2 now includes camera control features that allow selective zooming and control over camera movement. Pika Labs introduces image animation and a frame rate increase to 24 frames per second for smoother videos.
The Growth of AI is Probably Not Sustainable
Well, probably everything we’re doing in late stage capitalism is not sustainable, but I’ll save that for another time. Today I learned about the massive water usage that’s required to keep all these supercomputers cool when they’re building these large language models. Read about Microsoft’s Water Usage in Iowa

All The Cool Kids Are Now Using Claude
Well, at least my 15 year old son is. I showed it to him after the second day of school, not for cheating on papers, but for providing context. I showed him how to use Claude as a tutor and to provide context or additional explanations for his homework assignments and was completely blown away. “Dad, this is amazing! This is so much faster than digging through the book to find the answer!”. He’s now using it every day. Read more about Claude here
