Google Wants Us to Believe Gemini is Awesome
It’s a good thing I didn’t breathlessly ’ooh and aah’ over that Google Gemini video I posted on Friday. I had actually finished writing then post on Thursday afternoon and said “everybody will be talking about it”. By mid day Friday all the tech blogs and journals I follow were exposing Goggle’s slight of hand. Not exactly lying, but editing the footage to make Gemini’s capabilities more convincing than they really are. Parmy Olson of Bloomberg filed this first critique, and everyone else just piled on.
To be clear, Google Gemini Ultra, the one that is not released yet, is marginally better than ChatGPT 3.5, the one from 8 months ago. The edited the video for brevity, but it also hides the lag time, and the model is not as powerful as they would want you to believe. Unfortunately, Google paves the way for so many things in tech and they are enabling future snake oil salesman and hucksters. From here on, take all AI promises with a grain of salt. Tom’s Guide Bard vs. ChatGPT
However, if you’d prefer to nerd out on the stats and the benchmark results and see which model actually won in head-to-head tests, Ryan Morrison at Tom’sGuide picked a winner check it out
Bottom Line: Google Gemini is still impressive and you can use it for free in Bard right now.
Google’s NotebookLM Now Available To All
Originally released last summer to a select few, Google’s AI powered research tool is now available to everyone and I plan to start using it for my research in 2024. If you’re a UX researcher, an academic, or just someone like me who sucks at writing and needs to deliver a 30 page paper in the near future, you should check it out or check it out again
Asking Midjourney to re-imagine your Photos
A fascinating (and Free) Medium post by Adrian Nenu where he uploads a series of his own photographs and uses Midjourney’s /Describe feature to create prompts by looking at the images and then generating (often) better examples of that image. While your mileage may vary, this means you could quickly art direct Midjourney if either had or could create an image which captured the maid idea of your vision. If you use Midjourney on a regular basis, you should really check it out
Shelly Palmer Prompt Frameworks Again
Shelly Palmer writes a fantastic newsletter and said that this post was so popular that he’s posting it again. I’ve shared it before as well, so if you’re interested in getting the most out of ChatGPT, check it out
That’s it for Monday December 11. I hope you’re having a fantastic day and you feel better prepared to face an ever changing world. Questions? Send me a message, I’m always happy to keep learning!
