2024: The year of “AI on your Device”
As generative AI models become more efficient and specialized AI chips become more powerful, we’ll soon see AI as a dedicated feature on our devices that don’t have any dependencies on the cloud. And, of course, a whole new crop of marketing campaigns promising AI superlatives unique to that brand.

Now, as artificial intelligence’s relentless advance continues, researchers and technologists are looking for ways to take the next step—to build AI health coaches that sift through health data and tell users how to stay fighting fit.
Microsoft Surface: The First AI PC
These PCs, codenamed CADMUS, will reportedly be designed to run the AI features Microsoft is packaging into a future release of Windows. They’ll also come with improvements to performance, battery life, and security on par with Apple silicon, according to Windows Central.
Ready or Not: The AI Phones
We’ve actually been using AI on our phones for the least 5 or 6 years, but none of it was really consumer focused. The phones kept getting more powerful and expensive and we kept buying them. However, the new marketing message in 2024 is about the new super-duper, AI powered phone. Check it out. Or, read about why this isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Death to the Double Diamond
If you’re a regular reader of this newsletter, you know that I’m a big fan of the Board of Innovation. They have a lot of great ideas about how to innovate with AI and here’s another one. While the diagram still looks like two diamonds to me, they’re calling their new ‘Stingray’ model a new way to innovate with AI and declaring “Death to the Double Diamond”. So the change is not as big as you may think. There's also a phenomenon I hate that I call vocabulary inflation, which is the tendency to come up with new names for the same things — old wine in new bottles. Constantly changing our terminology confuses the UX field no end.
